Seminar with Prof. Patrick Willems - KU Lueven University - Belgium

In the afternoon of Aug 16th, 2018, Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Hoa – Deputy Director of the Academy had a meeting with Prof. Patrick Willems, Dean of Hydraulics Department- KU Lueven University - Belgium.

KU Lueven University is the oldest university in Belgium, established in 1425. KU Lueven University is also considered as a leading institution with a great deal of fundamental research and application in Europe. Currently, the University has about 300 training disciplines with about 65,000 students.

Prof. Patrick has extensive experience in research and training in the fields of hydrology, hydraulics, climate change and disaster prevention and control. In term of research, Prof. Patrick has published over 400 international papers, most of which are in the journal ISI and Scopus. Currently, Prof. Patrick is also the editor of the famous "Hydrology" magazine specializing in Regional Study. On training, besides as university lecturer, Prof. Patrick has over 20 successful graduated students and he also plays a role of Director of the Arenberg Doctor Training Program.

Participating the seminar, together with  Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Hoa were the representatives from the Institute for Water and Environment (IWE), Key Laboratory of River and Coastal Engineering, Centre for Training and International Cooperation, the Administrative Board, the General Planning Board.

In particular, there was the participation of Dr. Trinh Quang Toan, who is working at Davis Campus, University of California. He is the one of 100 scholars of the "Connecting Vietnam Innovation Network" Program organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

At the seminar, Prof. Patrick presented a number of recent breakthrough studies by the team on areas of mathematic modeling, extreme meteorological adaptation urban, climate change, optimal design and operation, disaster risk assessment ...

In the discussion section, delegates gave comments on related topics, especially the approach on modernity and balance with existing monitoring database of Vietnam.

On behalf of Vietnam Academy of Water Resources, Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Academy thanked the delegation for visiting Vietnam Academy of Water Resources. Prof. Tran Dinh Hoa highly appreciated the obtained results of Prof. Patrick and the research team as well as the discussion on some directions for research cooperation between the two sides in the coming time, in particular:

Firstly, to maintain the cooperative relationship by sharing information and experiences in the fields of interest of two sides.

Secondly, to develop joint research co-operation to be funded by the Research Assistances Funds of Belgium and Vietnam.

Thirdly, to conduct workshops, annual seminars to present new research results and thus, good paper/article of Vietnamese scientists can be selected for publication on international journals.

Fourthly, the two sides will draft a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and be signed in the next meeting.
