On 10/12/2018, Director General of Vietnam Academy for Water Resources Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Vu Viet had a meeting with Prof. Franz Nestmann - Director of KIT –Federal Republic of Germany in terms of coordinating the implementation of studies in ViWat project.

There were also leaders and experts from the Planning Department; Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, Institute of Ecology and Works Protection in the meeting with Prof. Franz Nestmann.

In the meeting, Prof. Nestmann - Director of KITwould like VAWR to share the current situation of ViWat project implementation, expected contents for the cooperation with German side so that KIT can develop the program for implementation and coordination appropriately.

On behalf of Vietnam Academy for Water Resources, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Vu Viet – Director General of VAWR welcomed Prof. Dr. Nesman to visit and work with Vietnam Academy for Water Resources. Director General of VAWR agreed with proposed activities of Director of KIT and said that VAWR would like to discuss common issues, share wishes for cooperation and support of KIT in this meeting.

Then, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Bang – Head of Planning Department said that 3 studiesof ViWat project would be carried out in December, 2018 and shared activities expected for cooperation with KIT during project implementation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Bang said that for thestudy on proposing an erosion control technology solution for coastal protection appropriately in the Mekong River Delta based on the physical model, KIT would share data and experience on sustainable coastal protection in the world; based on survey data, would cooperate with Vietnamese side to analyze and evaluate current solutions in Vietnam; share and provide data from physical model at KIT; assist Vietnamese research team in developing and conducting experiments of physical modelin  types of coastal protection works in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. In particular, he would like KIT to share experiences on conducting experiments on dynamic river physical model; and coordinate with Vietnam to analyize and evaluate results from physical model to select the appropriate solution.

Regarding the study on proposing solutions to train Tien and Hau rivers for sustainable socio-economic development in the Mekong River Delta, KIT would send experts to participate in the overview partin order to have an appropriate data set in overview part,  share experiences in regulating rivers in Germany and other rivers in the world. In the process of analysis and selection of scenarios, Vietnamese side would like to receive KIT’s support on proposedsolutions and both sides would evaluate these solutions together; coordinate to design typical model and typical coastal protection solutions.

Finally, regarding the study on non-structural solutions for estuary protection in Ca Mau peninsula, VAWR hoped that KIT can discuss and propose structural solutions in harmony with nature forbanks protection; coordinate to research on physical model; identify the basic specifications of structural solutions in harmony with nature for banks protection; consult with the German side in terms of criteria determining the scope of application of non-structural solutions for the study area.

Responding to needs of VAWR for KIT support, Prof. Dr. Nesman – Director of KIT has appreciated VAWR’s opinions as well as orientation in research coordination.
